Drumoak-Durris Church Family Ceilidh a Stompin' Success

Drumoak-Durris Church held a Family Ceilidh from 7 till 11 on Saturday 24th April, in the Kirkton of Durris Hall. Anyone who was there who didn't enjoy themselves would have nobody to blame but themselves, and anyone who wasn't there will wish that they had been there. Ably organised by Mark Bentley, Howard Fowlie and Mary Robertson the evening went like the polished event it very much was. Ceilidh's are a time for dancing and dancing there certainly was. In our church, we use the term "All Ages" for our family services; this ceilidh was certainly an all age event; if the youngest attendee was about 93 days old and the eldest was 93 years old then surely that covers "all ages"?" It was encouraging, too, to see so many teenagers keeping alive the spirit of a "family ceilidh" where we can all meet and mix happily together.
Music was provided by Ceilidh Stomp, considered to be one of the best ceilidh bands in Aberdeen - and on that night there was no disagreement to that claim! Jenny, Clare, Chris, Nick, Grigor, Dougie and Lucy kept us going until the night was over - too soon for many. When needed Clare gave a quick run through of the steps but there were enough people who knew the dances to be able to help those who didn't. With toddlers toddling around the floor, a sharp lookout and some stag-like ability was needed. Gay Gordons, Canadian Barn Dance, the Witches' Reel, Military Two Step, Dashing White Sergeant, Highland Scottische, Scottish Waltz - we did them all and others. To test our fitness levels, we did a Hooligans Jig, which has been described as "legalised GBH" and so it can be if spirits get too high. The Orcadian style Strip the Willow is good training for a rugby match, or shopping in Aberdeen when  the January sales begin. Stovies were provided by Kevin Farquar, from Kintore.
Look, this was just a super evening and something we'll do again - be there!
