Drumoak-Durris Church held an All Age Family worship in Drumoak Church today May 23rd - Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is a Greek word meaning "50", as of course you all know. Pentecost is the festival when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is celebrated on the Sunday fifty days after Easter. (Pentecost is also known as Whitsun.) It is considered to be the date of the birth of the Christian Church and Drumoak-Durris chose to use "birthday" as the theme of the service. Children and younger leaders played a very prominent role in the service; giving readings, leading prayers and leading the actions in the praises such as "With god's Power Working in Us." We had a large birthday cake with innumerable candles; not 2000 odd but certainly a goodly number which took as long to blow out as they did to light. The theme of the reading from Acts 2 vs 1- 13 where the multitude were able to understand clearly even though many different languages were used was highlighted by several of the congregation speaking phrases such as "Praise the Lord" in languages which included Zulu, French, Dutch, Greek, Latin and others. When spoken simultaneously, it was a vivid illustration of what it must have been like when the assembled Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Cretans, Arabs, Romans and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene came together and heard the message. It was a wonderful and well-crafted service - you should have been there!
